Laos Southern Highlights: Pakse, Wat Phou and Don Khong
This four-day trip follows southern Laos from Pakse into the Bolaven Plateau, Champasak, Wat Phou, Don Khone and Don Khong. It combines road travel, ferry crossings and a boat trip through the region’s river landscape. The route includes Wat Phou, a Khmer temple complex dating to the 5th century, a visit to the Bolaven Plateau with its cooler climate and agricultural areas, and time around the waterfalls and villages along the way. The final days continue through the 4,000 Islands area before returning to Pakse. Trip notes Private, air-conditioned transport is used throughout the land sections. Tad Lo
Arrival in Pakse and drive to Tad Lo
Arrive in Pakse and travel west to the Bolaven Plateau. Stop at Tad Fan waterfall, then continue through an area known for coffee, tea, cardamom and banana plantations. In the afternoon, reach Tad Lo and visit a local village.- - 2
Don Khong
Tad Lo to Wat Phou and Don Khong
After breakfast, head toward Khong Island with a stop at Pha Suam waterfall and nearby Lao Teung villages. Continue via Pakse and cross the Mekong by ferry to visit Wat Phou. After the temple visit, travel by boat to Don Khong for the night.B - 3
Pakse
Don Khone and Khone Phapheng from Don Khong
Start with a boat trip around Don Khone, including traces from the French period and Liphi Waterfall. Return to the mainland at Ban Nakasang and continue south to Khone Phapheng, then drive back to Pakse for the night.B - 4
