Thailand Adventure: Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Hilltribes
Travel from Bangkok to northern Thailand on an eight-day trip that combines city time, an overnight train, a two-day hilltribe trek and a kayaking day on the Mae Taeng River. Start in Bangkok with an orientation walk and time to explore at your own pace. Continue by overnight train to Chiang Mai, then spend time in the city before heading into the hills. The trek visits Mae Malai Market, Mok Fah Waterfall, hilltribe villages and a river valley route that ends in Sop Kai Village. Back in Chiang Mai, there is time to explore the city and its night markets before the final overnight train to Bangkok. The trip includes basic overnight rail travel, walking in mountainous terrain and time in remote villages, so a good level of fitness and suitable gear are important. Important to know: The two-day trek involves sustained walking and can be demanding. Conditions may be muddy or slippery during the wet season from May to October. An overnight pack is needed for the hike, and sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothing are recommended. For visits to temples or other religious sites, shoulders and knees should be covered and closed-toe shoes should be worn. This tour includes two overnight trains. Sleeping conditions are simple, and compartments may be shared with other travellers or local passengers.
